EVALUATION OF THE EUCALYPTOL OIL BIO-CHARACTERISTIC DATA FOR LUNG CANCER CONTROL

Lung cancer is a malignant pulmonary tumor characterized by uncontrolled cell proliferation. Eucalyptol oil (EPO) showed cytotoxic and anti-proliferative activities on the A549 cell viability which indicated the effectiveness of oil constituents against lung cancer. However, the instability, volatility, and aqueous immiscibility of EPO limit its bioavailability and pharmacological activity. This study aims to develop a nebulized EPO nano-emulsion formulation to increase its efficacy, stability, and bioavailability as a possible lung cancer treatment. EPO nano-emulsion formulation was created by incorporating Tween 80 at a concentration of 16%v/v. The results showed that EPO nano-emulsion improved the stability, solubility, aerodynamic behavior, and cytotoxicity of EPO. EPO nano-emulsion formulation’s anticancer action against A549 lung cancer cells was achieved via interfering with the G0/G1 phase. The EPO nano-emulsion formulation was found to cause apoptosis against A549 lung cancer cells. A549 cells treated with EPO nano-emulsion had an 18.42% reduction in autophagic cell death. Based on these findings, the nano-emulsion formulation shows promise as a potential vehicle for EPO, which might be used as a less invasive and more effective approach for treating lung cancer.
